Learning any language what with all of the nuances, slang, and different intonations is difficult. I lived in China for a while many years back, and did my best to learn Mandarin, as well as some of the local dialect where I was staying. After one meal, my intonation was off on one word, and instead of saying “i’m full” I apparently said the equivalent of “MY GOD!!!”. It was definitely easier to learn being immersed in the language…mostly because you have no other choice. Now, I’m working on learning Japanese with books, etc. It’s been tough finding something that works with that method, but the guy that puts on the Japanese From Zero site and book series has been an incredibly useful tool. I have a ways to go, but now I can actually read and write some Japanese which was something I never even began to learn in China apart from the three characters that formed my name there…which equated to Character, Safety and Rice I believe it was 🙂
